The 33rd Tsinghua Summer Workshop on Global and China Studies

On June 21st of this year, the 33rd Summer Sojourn I (Tsinghua) held its closing ceremony, where graduates received their graduation certificates awarded by Tsinghua University. The entire summer workshop officially concluded with great success. The Global and China Studies Program would like to express its heartfelt gratitude to Tsinghua University and all the dedicated professors for their hard work and efforts, which have greatly benefited the students.

In this year's summer workshop, Tsinghua University made arrangements to maximize the improvement of Putonghua proficiency for the participants within one month. The university organized a training program conducted by professors from the International Chinese Language and Culture Center. Tsinghua University students were also assigned as mentors to provide guidance to the participants. The participants had classes five days a week, with each class lasting three hours. Additionally, Tsinghua University provided an advanced Mandarin class for students with higher language proficiency, following the standards of broadcasters, to help them consolidate their foundation and train their pronunciation skills. Tsinghua University also assisted the students in applying for the National Language Commission's Mandarin proficiency test, enabling them to take the assessment under the best conditions.

During the Sojourn, Tsinghua University invited experts and scholars from different research fields to deliver keynote speeches on contemporary issues in China. For example, Associate Professor Jin Jun from the Department of Sociology at Tsinghua University shared his insights on "Organizational Fields and Action Strategies: Public Participation in Environmental Governance" with the students. Professor Shi Zhiqin from the Department of International Relations at Tsinghua University discussed "The Belt and Road Initiative's 10th Anniversary and China's International Public Goods Construction" with the students. Professor Chen Jin from the School of Economics and Management at Tsinghua University exchanged ideas with the students on China's technological innovation, and so on.

In addition, Tsinghua University arranged various field trips for the participants, including visits to the Great Wall at Badaling, the Museum of the War of Chinese People's Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, and the Forbidden City, allowing the students to experience the culture and national conditions of China firsthand. Lastly, under the guidance of Tsinghua University professors, the students conducted a social survey and completed a research report. The scope of the report was not limited and could focus on various aspects of Beijing's society. The topics chosen by this year's students were closely related to current social trends and included subjects such as carbon trading in China, desertification control, media and marriage beliefs, and the Hong Kong high-end talent entry scheme. Throughout the process of conducting their research reports, the students analyzed their observations and data, and drew their own conclusions. In the span of a whole month, the students not only improved their Putonghua proficiency but also gained a deeper understanding of the current situation in Beijing through a series of visits and lectures.
