The China Studies Programme,the Advanced Institute for Contemporary China Studies and the Institute of Creativity of HKBU organised the 3rd Young Scholars’ Conference on China Studies from 14 to 15 December, during which more than 60 young scholars and researchers from around the world had the opportunity to explore and discuss the global perspectives on China Studies.
Renowned scholars Professor Li Qiangof the Tsinghua University and Professor Carolyn Cartierof the University of Technology Sydney were invited to deliver the keynote speeches. Their topics were“The Urbanization of Mainland China” and “Research Design for China Studies: Transcending Differences in the International Academy” respectively.
A total of 23panels were held and the topics included Tradition as a Source of Inspiration, Prospects and Challenges of Chinese Economy,Conceptualizing China in Modern Chinese Literature, China Business and Management, China and the World from the Maritime perspective, Chinese Diplomacy and International Relation, Transport & Logistics Development in Chinaetc.
An Outstanding Paper Award was first introduced in the Conference to encourage, commend and reward research papers for high quality, originality and significance. The Outstanding Paper Award was given to two excellent scholars: Ms. Yang Yujeong from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and Mr. Liu Wei-Chih from National Tsinghua University. Their paper titles are “Labor Dispute Resolution in Authoritarian China: Local Development Strategies and the Formalization of Dispute Resolution” and “Flesh, Shadow and Spirit in Prison: a Study on Trial and Literatures of Wang Jingwei’s Followers” respectively. The Honourable Mention Award was also given to four outstanding scholars, they are Ms. Xiong Yiran from Tsinghua University, Mr. ChangYu-Wei from Academia Sincia, Mr. Feng Ning and Ms. Catherine S. Chan from Hong Kong Baptist University.
A Professional Development Workshop for Research Postgraduate Students was also designed for all conference participants. Five renowned scholars, including Prof. Zheng Lu from Tsinghua University, Prof. Liu Shi Yung from Academia Sincia, Prof. Jeffrey Dippmann from Central Washington University, Prof. Lai Chi Kong from the University of Queensland, and Prof. Adolf K.Y. Ng from University of Manitobawere invited to share their experience on publicationandteaching strategies, research design, network building, research funding application etc.
The conference was co-organised by the School of Humanities, School of Social Sciences and Institute of Education of Tsinghua University, Institute of Taiwanese History, Academia Sincia, Taipei, Max Webber Foundation, Central Washington University, Asia-Pacific Cluster for Chinese Entrepreneurial Studies, the University of Queensland, Australia, Asper School of Business, University of Manitoba, Canada.
